Time Is Memory
A phenomenological argument from retention, distributed records, and the point where language stops
Abstract
A proposition appeared during meditation with unusual clarity: time is memory.
I do not mean the familiar claim that memory helps human beings estimate or experience an independently existing time. I mean something stronger and more difficult to dismiss: insofar as succession, duration, movement, or change can appear to an observer at all, some information about one state must remain available in another. Remove that retention completely and the distinction between before and after no longer seems available from inside the system.
The inquiry becomes more interesting when memory is widened from autobiographical recollection to retained information. Organisms embody developmental and evolutionary history. Other beings retain consequences of interaction. Artifacts and environments preserve records. A multitude of interacting beings can therefore function as a distributed memory system even when no single being contains the whole history.
This does not prove that physical time has no existence independent of records. It identifies a narrower and potentially important boundary: every time we experience, measure, describe, or infer appears to depend on retained difference. Push that observation far enough—through physiology, information, space, and finally language—and the machinery required to ask what time is begins to look remarkably similar to the machinery that gives time its intelligible form.
1. Remove memory completely
Begin with two states:
A
B
We immediately read them as a sequence. We say that A came first and B came later.
But that judgment already contains memory.
For B to be experienced as different from A, something of A must remain available while B is present. If A disappears absolutely—not merely forgotten later, but retained nowhere in the observer—then B cannot be experienced as after A. It is simply what appears.
A completely memoryless observer therefore would not experience an infinitely changing state. Even change is already a relational achievement. It requires the preservation of a difference:
A retained while B appears
→ comparison
→ change
Without retention there is no experienced repetition, because “again” requires a previous occurrence. There is no experienced duration, because “still” requires persistence across a retained interval. There is no experienced movement, because movement requires comparing spatial relations across at least two distinguishable states.
This is close to a longstanding problem in the philosophy of temporal consciousness. Edmund Husserl distinguished the immediate impression from retention of the just-past and protention toward what is about to occur. A single isolated impression, on his account, cannot supply the perception of a temporally extended object. The important distinction is that Husserlian retention is not ordinary episodic memory; it is a more primitive structural preservation of the just-elapsed phase of experience. See Reference 1.
That distinction sharpens rather than weakens the present hypothesis. If the word memory is too narrow, use retained information.
The question becomes:
Does any intelligible time survive when every form of retention is removed?
I do not yet see how.
2. The multitude remembers
A single observer does not need to carry the whole record.
Imagine a multitude of causally interacting beings. Each being has a present state, but those states contain consequences of interactions with other beings and with the environment.
One person remembers another. A scar preserves an encounter. A moved object preserves an action. A photograph preserves an optical event. A nervous system preserves learning. A landscape preserves erosion. A genome preserves selected structure across generations. A computer file preserves an earlier symbolic configuration.
The individual can forget while the system remembers.
This suggests a stronger architecture:

The continuity we normally assign to a single enduring observer may therefore be implemented relationally by a network of partial records.
In computer science there is an illuminating analogy. Leslie Lamport showed that distributed systems do not need a perfectly shared physical clock in order to reason about causal ordering. If one event can influence another, the system can construct an order consistent with that causal relation using logical clocks. See Reference 2. This is not evidence that the universe literally runs Lamport clocks. The analogy matters because it demonstrates something conceptually simpler: ordering can be carried by relations and information exchange rather than by access to one universal clock.
That motivates a more precise version of the original proposition:
Time may be distributed memory within a causally interacting information system.
Or, more cautiously:
The time available to an observer may be the informational structure by which a present configuration contains or constrains other configurations.
3. Biology is already historical information
The thought experiment becomes harder once an organism is allowed into it, because physiology is already saturated with retained history.
Take binocular vision. The visual system does not need a person to consciously remember the previous frame in order to produce stereoscopic depth. But the organism capable of binocular vision is itself the present result of accumulated structure: genetic inheritance, embryological development, neural organization, calibration, learning, and evolutionary selection.
So if the experiment is really intended to remove memory, it cannot stop at autobiographical memory.
It must remove:
- learned structure;
- developmental structure;
- inherited structure;
- adaptive state;
- persistent sensory integration;
- and every other mechanism by which one configuration influences the next.
At that point we are no longer imagining a simplified human observer. We are removing the historical information that made the category organism meaningful.
The body itself can be understood, in this limited informational sense, as history made present.
This matters because otherwise the experiment cheats. We remove explicit recollection while leaving an enormous archive encoded in physiology, and then announce that an observer still perceives a temporally structured world.
A cleaner question is harsher:
What is an observer after every retained consequence required to build and maintain an observer has been removed?
The category may simply fail.
4. Space without movement
Space provides a useful comparison because spatial relations seem to require less retention than temporal ones.
Consider a single configuration:

Without referring to another state, it is at least coherent to describe relations within this configuration. The circle is left of the triangle. The square lies between them. There is separation, extension, shape, and arrangement.
Now ask whether the circle moved.
That cannot be established from one configuration.
Movement requires something like:
configuration 1: ● ▲
configuration 2: ● ▲
and a retained relation between them.
This produces an asymmetry worth investigating:
space ≈ relation within a configuration
movement ≈ relation across retained configurations
experienced time ≈ ordering supplied by retained difference
Perhaps “space without memory” can still mean extension without movement.
But “time without memory” is much harder even to formulate, because temporal extension seems to require the very cross-configuration relation we have removed.
5. Measurement does not escape the problem
A clock appears to give us time independently of memory, but a clock actually presents a state.

That display becomes temporal information only because it belongs to an ordered system of possible states and because some observer or recording process can correlate the current state with others.
The same is true of more sophisticated clocks. Pendulums, oscillators, atomic transitions, radioactive decay, and computational timers provide physical correlations. To conclude that an interval elapsed, some present state must encode or be compared with another.
This does not mean clocks are imaginary. It means that measurement itself is record-dependent.
Every empirical statement of the form
“time passed”
arrives through some presently available difference: a changed clock, a detector state, an entropy gradient, a memory, a document, a body, a signal, or another correlation.
The ontological question remains open. There may be a temporal structure independent of every possible record. But if so, the difficulty is epistemic and conceptual:
What observation could establish that structure without itself becoming a record?
6. The person as an information lineage
This also changes the ordinary intuition of personal continuity.
Conventionally, a human organism is born, develops, ages, and dies. Nothing in this note disputes that biological history.
But the felt proposition “I was born” contains another question: what exactly is the I that supposedly traveled intact from the birth event to the present act of saying “I”?
What is available now are present structures containing history: memory, body, testimony, photographs, records, habits, relationships, consequences, and the extraordinarily dense causal agreement of many other beings and things.
That continuity can be real without requiring an unchanging entity to have been transported through every moment.
The multitude can preserve a lineage.

The phrase “unborn” becomes interesting here, provided it is not converted into a claim about an immortal soul. The organism has a birth. The information lineage has a history. But when the present knowing of that history is searched for as a persistent object that made the journey from birth to now, that object is not obviously found.
7. Where Dzogchen becomes relevant
Dzogchen is useful here precisely because it resists turning a successful inquiry into a new metaphysical object.
If “time is memory” becomes a doctrine to cling to, the inquiry has simply replaced TIME with a new substance called MEMORY.
Longchen Rabjam repeatedly directs investigation toward arising, remaining, and ceasing, and describes awareness as naturally unborn rather than as a concrete entity. See Reference 3. In Immaculate Nectar, he connects the interruption of thought concerning past, present, and future with the absence of coming and going when thought and recollection are absent. See Reference 4.
That language is strikingly close to the present experiment, but it should not be abused as scientific confirmation. Dzogchen is not offering an information-theoretic model of spacetime.
Its relevance is methodological.
Follow the distinctions directly. Look for what establishes before and after. Look for the entity that supposedly persists. Do not replace what cannot be found with another conceptual object merely because the replacement sounds profound.
The investigation can therefore reach a point at which it is no longer correct to say:
- time exists;
- time does not exist;
- only the present exists;
- everything is infinitely changing;
- or awareness is some timeless substance.
Each sentence reinstates distinctions that the inquiry has just removed.
8. Language is the final retained structure
There is a final problem.
Language itself requires memory.
A word must remain available long enough to participate in a sentence. Meanings depend on retained distinctions. Definitions refer to other definitions. Grammar orders symbols. The concept time gains force through relations to before, after, change, duration, present, past, and future.
If physiology is removed, and every form of retained information is removed, and finally the semantic memory required for language is removed, then human language no longer has an obvious object to operate on.
“Time,” “memory,” “observer,” “state,” “exists,” and “does not exist” are all pieces of machinery we brought with us.
This may be the natural endpoint of the experiment.
Not because an answer has been found, and not because there is a mystical realm hiding beyond words, but because the instrument of description has reached a boundary created by its own operating requirements.
9. What the hypothesis does and does not establish
The argument supports several limited claims:
- Experienced succession requires retention. To experience B as following A, some information about A must remain available with B.
- Change and movement require cross-state relation. A single isolated configuration does not contain its own transition history.
- Organisms already embody retained information. Removing only conscious recollection is insufficient for a truly memoryless-observer thought experiment.
- A multitude can distribute continuity. No individual observer needs to contain the complete record for a system to preserve causal history.
- Empirical time is record-mediated. Every measurement or inference of elapsed time reaches us through present correlations or records.
It does not establish that:
- physical theories containing a time parameter are wrong;
- spacetime has no observer-independent structure;
- entropy, causality, or dynamics reduce trivially to human recollection;
- consciousness is an eternal substance;
- or meditation provides experimental proof of cosmology.
The stronger ontological thesis remains a hypothesis:
What we call time may not be an independently flowing ingredient of reality at all. It may be the order produced when information about differing configurations is retained and distributed through a causally interacting system.
That claim is stronger than the phenomenology presently warrants. But the weaker result is already substantial.
10. The boundary
The inquiry began with a simple sentence:
Time is memory.
Following it carefully changed the meaning of both words.
Memory widened into retention, record, inherited structure, environmental consequence, and distributed information. Time narrowed from an assumed cosmic flow into the ordering we can actually experience, measure, and describe through those retained differences.
Then the thought experiment removed physiology, because physiology was already a record. It removed the isolated observer, because an observer was already a historical construction. It tested space and found that extension might survive a single configuration while movement did not. Finally it reached language and discovered that language itself preserves the distinctions needed to formulate the question.
So the endpoint is not:
We have proved that time does not exist.
It is more interesting than that:
We followed the requirement for time backward through change, memory, organisms, information, and language—and found that the conditions required to formulate time may also be the conditions that give time its intelligible form.
Maybe time is memory is not the conclusion.
Maybe it is the lever.
Pull it far enough and the question turns back on the machinery asking it. Beyond that point, another definition may contain less information than silence.
